Web accessibility epetition

I commented recently on the BBC Access 2.0 blog on the recently launched epetition for government accessibility.
My main issue of the petition is the focus of working towards achieving compliance through WCAG standards. I’ve got my own campaign going to get people to stop focusing on standards, please! It’s not rocket science that a site can still be inaccessible whilst still achieving standards.
Please focus on the concept of accessibility and the users. By all means use standards as a guideline and reference point, but don’t live by them.
Whilst I feel somewhat guilty for not signing the epetition, as the intentions are good, I would not hesitate to sign something more appropriately worded.
Through Accessify, I discovered I am not the only one who is not signing it…
